Memorial day congestion as climbers head up the hogback and skirt the bergscrund to the left. A cloud cap obscures the Pearly Gates and even more climbers. Click on this pic twice to get a larger format 5-24-03

Hasn't voted | Oh my...that's the best traffic shot I've seen! I'd trade that for any hour sitting in a Philadelphia rush hour! Hahaha!!

Voted 10/10 | I like the pic and the ambience, not the congestion but is a photo very representative.
Cheers. | | Posted May 23, 2006 7:08 am |

Voted 10/10 | That is a lot of climbers! Rush hour at almost 14000 feet. | | Posted Dec 5, 2006 4:54 pm |

Hasn't voted | I counted over 100 climbers that day. This pic just doesn't show them all. Some were already heading down and others were still coming up.
Crazy. Thanks for the vote. | | Posted Dec 5, 2006 5:24 pm |
| Corax | Ropes | |
Voted 10/10 | The slope doesn't look steep.
Is there another reason the climbers are roped?
Steeper up ahead?
Because of fear of worse visibility?
A guided group with rules?

Hasn't voted | It gets real steep up through the Pearly Gates (see pic) and sometimes it is bare ice requiring the rope. On this particular day, I was one of about 4 or 5 who went solo and unroped. The snow was such that I didn't need a rope nor wanted one. | | Posted Jan 8, 2007 10:27 pm |

Voted 10/10 | Ok, thanks for the info.
Hood looks like a nice climb. I got really interested when I saw a photo in the BD catalogue.
I have to go there one day. | | Posted Jan 9, 2007 2:55 am |

Hasn't voted | just don't climb the standard route. Then you are back to 4-5 climbers max. I like the Leuthold Couloir. Anyway, I like the picture, I think it was similar when I went that way (one of my very first climbs 9 years ago...). | | Posted Apr 17, 2007 4:17 pm |
| gimpilator | Great shot. | |
Voted 10/10 | It reminds me of this one that I took on the Roman Wall. Not as good as yours but the same sort of situation. | | Posted Jun 27, 2007 6:53 pm |

Hasn't voted | Thank you and it shows that some places need to be avoided on holiday weekends. | | Posted Jun 28, 2007 1:26 am |
| AJones | Wow! | |
Voted 10/10 | That's an amazing shot and a reality check. To me, part of the climbing experience is the (relative) solitude. This would have depressed me. Is it fairly difficult to remain motivated on such a crowded climb, or does the position and the beauty of the mountain outweigh the crowds. | | Posted Dec 18, 2007 2:39 pm |

Hasn't voted | Thank you for the comments. I was surprised by the numbers of climbers that day and this pic doesn't show
the thirty or forty others that were either in the fog above or already heading back down. I felt a lot of energy though from the others and I'm sure that helped me in my solo effort. Memorial day weekend is not the time to climb this mountain. | | Posted Dec 18, 2007 11:32 pm |
