Indian Paintbrush

Indian Paintbrush

Indian paintbrush (member of genus Castilleja) gets its name because the bracts (though commonly considered the flower, they aren't) appear as if dipped into a can of paint. The flowers of the plant are actually hidden among the bracts. This one was imaged in June 2005 while hiking through Dean Canyon at Philmont Scout Ranch, NM.
