Instead of taking the talus/scree-filled Rockwell Variation you can veer off beforehand for some nice solid Sierra granite fun. Several hundred feet of solid Class 3-5.4 bypasses much scree misery. One of the Irvine hikers I climbed with on August 24, 2002 making the first technical move on to the 5.4 approach variation.
