I was on this mountain via Cable Car from Mittenwald when I was 8 years old with my family (July 1985). It is the only mountain in Europe I have been on the summit of. I have been look for years about information on this mountain and region. Does the Mittenwald Cable Car still run up this mountain!!!! I never forgot that view .
As always an amazing job. Your works have always set the standard for all of us to follow.
Does the cable car still run up there? Not sure myself since I have been there from the Achensee side only. But Gumpie wrote a TR last night in which he said something about going by the cable car. Not sure when he went there though.
Gangolf, somehow Karwendel is very close to my heart, even if I had never been on its summits. Perhaps because of Buhl's book, similarity to Julian Alps or whatever. I went through your page quickly and missed mentioning both Ahornbodens. From pictures I saw, they must be great places.
Regardin name... I don't know. I thought the word kar means in German something. I associate it with the valley, filled with stones and gravel. I also heard the possibility that the word Karavanke, Karawanken, comes from an old Celtic word for Kara=black and Wanken=meadows. Strange to me, anyway. But the name of mountains in the middle of Tirol probably does not have a Slavic origin.
For the names we might ask Sherlock Mauguier - the family names I mentioned must come from somewhere too. Kar means cirque - and yes there are a great many. But what struck me most about the names was that many summits are called "Joch" which usually stands for the passes.
Ahornboden - hmm - I've never been there. Moreover I'm not too fond of the valleys - I only go there when it's raining. Which again explains why I don't like the valleys too much.
Next act are the Lechtal Alps - and then I'll take some time off for the maps...
I just checked out a book by Heinz Zak on the Karwendel mountains, and he has some beautiful pictures. Thanks for the page, I'll be clutching it's printout on explorations for years to come!

Re: Really special
Thanks a lot! Yes, Heinz Zak is one hell of a photographer. I enjoyed his work covering the Hubers' free Salathé on El Capitan. Far better suited than my page to clutch to is the Alpenvereinsführer which you find in the Maps & Books section. It's not exactly cheap though - 22€ at last count.
