It is possible in the dry season, certainly. There actually is a playa entry point at Sulfur, so you could do the Gerlach-Sulfur portion on the playa. If you were a tad adventurous and had a good 4WD, you could probably ride the playa all the way to the peak. Except up in that untraveled portion, there would be a lot of hidden gullies, etc so the going might be pretty slow for the last several miles.
