Great mountain to have for my first backpacking experience. It was long but not too difficult. We didn't stay on the summit too long because we got caught in the middle of a snowstorm. High threats of lighting chased us off. Rained a lot in lower elevations.

After spending the night at Lower Red Castle Lake, the morning revealed partly cloudy skies skirting the higher peaks. By the time I reached Kings Peak just past noon, rain, sleet, and snow had made travel more difficult and visibility meager. The subsequent hike down to Henry's Fork Lake was drearily cold. Still... a great hike despite the weather!

First time in the Uintas, a very unique mountain range indeed. Cool to see, but I'm not really drawn back. Dollar lake was a little tricky to find but a very nice place to stay. Passed a sizable flock of (domestic) sheep on the way down. We took it very chill and made it a three day trip, great time with friends.

Fun 3 day weekend, great campsite at Dollar Lake. Took the short cut from Gunsight Pass to Anderson Pass and down a chute back down to the valley. Hiked it with my wife and two good friends from Wyo, timed the rain storms perfect. Very unique Range!

Hiked in from the Henry's Fork TH and spent the night just off the trail near Dollar Lake in some trees. Got on the trail at 7:15, took the shortcut at Gunsight Pass, and summited in thick clouds before noon. Returned the same way. Rested for an hour, packed up camp, and back to the car before dusk.
No mosquitos to speak of. Some light rain a couple of times. A great trip!

Took the standard route over Gunsight Pass on the way up and went down the chute and across the meadow on the way back. Twelve and a half hours ctc with a lot of sheep in the meadow for comic relief. My second long day of this road trip.

Backpacked in for a 3 day excursion with hopes of summiting Kings Peak. First, couldn't locate dollar lake -- the trail does not seem to lead to it. However, we did create our own amazing campsite near the Gunsight Pass sign. Got up early on day 2 to summit. Started the hike in the dark and made it up through Gunsight pass and descended down into the basin. I was told there was a "short cut," but never could find it. Couldn't locate the trail. Ended up using so much energy searching for a trail that I finally gave up and hiked back to camp. All in all, it was still a great trip because the views in the area are stunning and I was able to do a fun hike to Henrys Lake.

Summited just before 5 pm and had the summit all to ourselves. We hiked in from the trailhead and took the shortcut chute below Anderson Pass. While on top a snowstorm rolled in and prevented us from bagging South Kings as well. Snowed hard during the descent.

Took the Girl on her first backpacking trip, for a simple overnighter.
Started in from Henrys Fork, camped about .25-mile above Dollar Lake, away from the mosquitoes.
Summited among a couple different Scout troops. Waited out a storm for over an hour just below Gunsight Pass, then once the thunder passed made it back to our tent to pack up camp in the pouring rain.
The last 11 miles of our 21-mile day were in rain. She did it all with a smile and a spring in her step. I think I will keep her. :-)
Made it back to the trailhead at 9 p.m., just in time to hit up some bad pizza in Mountain View.
State highpoint #33.

I took the "contour" short cut from Gunsight up to Anderson pass on the way up, and took the chute below Anderson Pass down into the basin on the way down. Cool area, but crowded (as expected). 10 hours 50 mins ctc, highpoint # 26.

Beautiful area. Only saw 7-8 people the entire two days we were there, pleasantly surprised. We took gunsight pass route from dollar lake, then hiked out that evening for a long day. Mosquitos were only bad thing about an awesome trip, and peak.

8/17/2013 Got an early (5 am) start from camp at Dollar Lake to beat forecasted thunder storms. We reached the summit at 8:15 am. Weather was holding nicely while on top I so headed over to South Kings. On the way back the weather started to turn. Made really quick time back to Anderson Pass as the skies darkened. We were back to camp by noon and broke camp and were back to the trailhead by 3:15 pm. Fun two days that included Gilbert, Gunsight, East Gunsight, Kings, and South Kings.
-Climbed Kings Peak as part of a backpack with my dad sometime during the summer of 1999. Cannot remember the exact dates.

3/30/2013 WMC one day ski trip. The conditions were as good as they get for the way back. Other than an occasional step here and there, glided or double poled the whole way back. 13:40 RT
3/31/2012 WMC one day ski trip. Nice hard crust on the way up and way too soft snow on the way down. Windy, but very warm. 14:53 RT. Skied through grass, mud, and small streams and over collapsing snow bridges.
3/26/2011 WMC one day ski trip. 0 degrees at the start. My food fell out of my sleeping bag and froze so I had to put it on the dash with the defroster on to thaw it. My breakfast was pretty crunchy. 9:25 up and 15:10 RT. Four of us made the summit. The most open water on the route that I have seen to date.
7/15/2010 Started at HF TH. Climbed Kings, S Kings, Painter Peak, Trail Rider Peak, Roberts Peak, N Emmons, Emmons, S Emmons, Owl, Lost BM, and Flat Top BM and exited via Dry Gulch in one long 21 hour day.
3/27/2010 The best conditions I've seen yet for this WMC one day ski event. 9 hrs to the summit and 14:40 RT. It was so nice to not have to ski back in the dark.
9/4/2009 With Scott Wesemann. We were lucky and just missed some really bad weather.
7/19/2009 Day hike from Henrys Fork TH. Expected a zoo, but saw almost no one.
7/7/2009 In one long 17 hour, 28+ mile day starting from the Henrys Fork TH, I did Kings Peak, S Kings Peak, Painter Peak (13387), and Trail Rider Peak (13247). Then descended into Painter Basin, back over Gunsight Pass, and back to the start. The weather was perfect.
Annual WMC ski trip. Grueling, but fun day and beautiful weather. Over a foot of new snow. 10 people made the summit. 16:45 round trip.
Annual WMC ski trip. Skied 14 miles, almost to the top of Gunsight Pass and then booted another 2 to the top of Kings Peak for 32 miles round trip. Left at 5:20 am (last person out of camp) and got back to the car at 9:20 pm for a total of 16 hours. I got to Gunsight Pass at 11:55 am, Kings at 3:05 pm, and back to Gunsight at 5:10 pm. Started at Henry's Fork winter parking which is another 7 miles round trip from the summer trailhead. Truely the hardest thing I've ever done. The weather was cloudy and it was flurrying off and on for the first 5 hours. Then it gradually cleared up but was incredibly windy from Elkhorn Crossing on. Fortunately, it was relatively warm (in the 20's). The skiing part was easy (at least for those of us who had been on skis more than once), the rest of it was not. The hardest part was traversing across the steep slope at the base of 13103 on the way to the base of Kings Peak. I got blown over once on the way over and slipped once on the way back, but fortunately brought an ice axe and managed two successful self arrests. Twelve people made it to the summit including MOCKBA and Moogie737 who had only been on x-country skis once before.
11 hour, 24 mile day hike from the Henrys Fork Summer TH with MM.
A leisurely 5 day backpack with lesdubois. Started at China Meadows and went up Smiths Fork over Smiths Fork Pass, up to Andersons Pass, up to Kings, down to Painter Basin, over Gunsight Pass, across Henrys Fork Basin, over the lower part of the Flattop/Powell ridge and back to the start.
