Longer Loop Hike in Tongue Mountains.
On four occasions, I have hiked a longer, 22 mile Tongue Mountain Range loop, as follows. Starting at the
northern trailhead for Brown Mountain on Rt. 9N, hike 11 miles south along the spine of the range
to Montcalm Pt. Then walk back 5.5 miles along the bay to Clay Meadow. From there, follow Rt. 9N
5 miles north to the starting point. I do this as a day hike. Because the last part is on the road, there is little danger
of being caught in the woods after sunset. On the other hand, the hike takes about 11 hours at a brisk pace,
so an early start is necessary to avoid walking on the road at night. The part on the road
passes two former CCC camps from the 1930s, one of which is now a small park, with picnic tables.
After 2 miles of fairly flat terrain, the road climbs steeply for over a mile, climbing the base of Brown mountain,
and then flattens again for the rest of the hike in the saddle below Brown Mountain. You can leave
water for the last 5 miles at the Clay Meadow parking lot and pick it up after hiking the first 16 miles.
