Casey BatesKeyhole Solo  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 13, 2007

Casey Bates

Left parking lot at 2:00am. Solo. Spring conditions. Snow not firm enough for crampons but an ice axe was essential for the many exposed traverses after the Keyhole. Few people. Great conditions.

First time attempting Longs in September 2006: Could not go beyond Keyhole due to wind and verglas. Solo trip. Bivied near treeline and began climbing at 3:00am. Sunrise was epic from the boulder field. An extremely valuable solo experience even without the summit!

Great hike up until keyhole when clouds started moving in. Got to the summit but couldn't see anything then it started to snow. Made it quite a long day.

A whole lot of fun! Started hiking at 2:30am. Summited by 8:30am. The top of the mountain was engulfed in a cloud, so the view was minimal, though the cloud broke for a few minutes. I thought the homestretch was great fun - best part of the mountain!

Crazy Climb! Story forthcoming. Wouldn't change anything, but wouldn't climb Longs that way again.

With my buddy Jeremy. We drove up there from Denver after work on Friday, had dinner and started hiking at midnight. Back at the car around 2pm the day after.

My first 14'er. Climbed the cables route and descended the Keyhole route in June 1984. We didn't have much of a view, snowed like crazy the whole time and if I remember correctly, most of the route was still snow. Good times, need to get back and do Longs on a clear day.

Windy climbing up to Loft, but died down while we were on Meeker so went on to Longs and down Keyhole.

Had planned this trip for three years, and it kept getting cancelled. Finally tackled it (and many of my fears) on this hike. My first Class 3 hike...I may be hooked, although I'm still kind of an exposure weenie...

Great day, sunny and mild. No ice axe needed. Fun scrambling from boulderfield to summit. 12 hours round trip.

The loft is a wonderful route! Much more fun than the tourist highway keyhole route. A storm the previous night put an inch of snow above 12,000 feet which greatly added to the difficulty, and fun! No matter how many times i climb this mountain it never gets old!! Kieners next time maybe?

Climbed keyhole for the first time last year and loved it. A beautiful day with great weather. I'm headed out later tonight to do it again. The weather looks a little iffy so we'll see how it goes.

Excellent climb. The route lived up to all it's reputation. It is truely a classic. A wonderful "blue sky" day. Moved pretty quickly - 5 hours from Chasim Lake to summit. Part of a two day double header with Mt. Meeker. Thanks Dan!!

After being turned back by terrential rains about a month ago, we made it to the summit with what seemed to be about 5,000 others. The trough is tough.

I climbed this peak several times in the 70`s by the keyhole rt. One time with my Mom, we got plastered by hail and lightning on the boulder field and had to hide under a giant boulder. That was the first time I heard rocks crackle from lightning! Great memories of a superb peak.

Keyhole mule route, repeated two weeks later. Straightforeward approach, sick exposure after the keyhole, enough confused climbers to send me into a four day panic attack. Weather was good on my bid, but if it isn't, you better not get stuck up there. It's an accessable mountain, but don't underestimate its hazards.

Keyhole again. Was with a girl friend for her first time (this made it a LONG day, she was SLOW). We ran into some dudes going up to Kieners, and I found myself jealous and contemplating a mutiny. Had a pesky cloud hanging out to the East w/lightening in the morning which made us stop and think...but, we felt that once we turned into Boulderfield, we'd be fine, since this cloud was lower than that, and we'd be shielded up in the bowl...and it was true. First time ever on Long's where I didn't either have hurricane-force winds past the Keyhole and/or get dumped on! Snow is all but gone in trough...Thousands of feet of pleasant scree await you if you come up from Glacier gorge...I need a new route...(not that I don't LOVE sharing this gorgeous mtn with 500 other people on any given day)...next summit of Long's will be more interesting...GUARANTEED.
