Looking up the steep south face of the Hohe Geige normal route

In this photo, it's almost impossible to see for more than a few meters where the route goes up. In reality, as long as the route isn't covered by snow, it's not too bad. Often you see the trail at your feet, and at less obvious places, there are splashes of red paint on the rocks. So, if you can't see far ahead, just follow the trail and the paint splashes for a bit until you see the next part of the trail or the next splash. On the other hand, if there is a lot of snow, the route is not only harder to find, but also dangerous. In the right conditions, this is avalanche terrain, and even if the snow is solid, there are steep sections, changing this from a difficult hiking route to a committed alpine experience. In case you ddin't spot it, the trail is on the left here. A little bit higher it will turn to the right, but although I came down there, even I don't see it. 29 June 2012.
