10/30/2013 After spending several hours hiking around Antelope Island, we drove back to Ogden and decided to add Malans Peak to the schedule. We started at the 29th street trailhead and reached the top in 55 min. After a quick hike down, I made my way back to SLC.

A brief walk up from 27th and into Taylors Canyon the trail is smooth very gradual and then you cross the bridge to the Malans and the fun is over or has it just begun. There is nothing gradual anymore it is up from here on out. You start taking very long switchbacks until you are top, which surprised me once I past the first long switchback didnt take too long. This trail is in really good shape and moderate to travel. A little rocky on the first leg, just watch your step and your head as you round the first going into the second there is a little overhang you have to dodge. I probably wouldnt have been so worn out by this one if I didnt start so late at night, give yourself plenty of time. I had to run down before it got to dark. The sunset was magnificent from the Peak.

7/14/12 - Exploring in the Basin
Headed up late in the day. It was really muggy as it had rained earlier. Tried to find a trail leading up to Mount Ogden. Found bits and pieces of trail, but not a clear, obvious path. Ran across the biggest rattlesnake I've seen, sunning on a rock near the river, half a mile or so above the Basin plaque. The snake spooked me, and I turned around shortly thereafter.
7/1/12 - Fast peak bag
Hurried up and back. Hot. Tired. No snakes.
6/27/12 - Waterfall Loop
Started up Waterfall Canyon, climbed the "chute", up and over into Malan's Basin, over to the Peak, and then down the switchbacks. A great hike!
5/28/12 - No Snow -
Hiked up to the peak and then the basin and then down through Waterfall Canyon. Saw a rattlesnake at the peak. All of the snow is gone. The plants in the basin are starting to sprout up, but the trail is easy to follow from the basin to Waterfall.
3/17/12 - Still Icy
Started up around 5:00 p.m. A little windy, especially at top.
Most of the snow is gone at the bottom, but the switchbacks still have lots of ice. As Collinshepherd said, bring your Yaks or Microspikes.
2/21/12 - In the dark and snow II
Climbed it again after work with my wife and Kadee. There was fresh snow on the trail, but it was relatively well-packed and not icy. Didn't use Microspikes or Yaks. A great night.
2/17/12 - In the dark and snow
Started up at 6:00 p.m. Put on Microspikes and a headlamp at the first good viewpoint around sunset. Gorgeous views. Hit the peak in the dark. Back to the car by 8:00.
The trail was nicely packed but not icy. The spikes made it easy to descend without having to worry about traction. A great hike!
1/14/12 - Malan's Peak with pup
What a gorgeous day! Took my little 8-month old Shih Tzu up. There was fresh snow and no ice. A great hike!

Not really a peak, but more like a look out point. Either way it is a nice, steep hike and the creek is ragin right now. I was up and down in a couple of hours. Great hike to do in the Ogden area if you want something steep and will get your lungs burning.

Took a trip up with my brother in law, my wife & son &my little 7 year old nephew who bagged his first summit with his little sister Eden who my brother in law carried up in a kid pack (sucks to be him!) 17 degrees today, but warm once you start working. The summit was cold and windy. Fun day to share the freedom of the hills with the little ones!

Hiked today in whiteout conditions with my son Liam an effort to burn some holiday calories. In spite of heavy falling snow, the trail just had 2 to 3 inches of powder on top of the hard pack. Found an awesome christmas tree (will post the picture). Great day!

Humped my way up Malan for the second time. Last trip up the peak I was smoking a pack a day, weighed 30 Lbs more and did it in the middle of winter. Not surprisingly, this time was MUCH easier. Weather was nice and the 10 degree drop in the shade was greatly appriciated. Had a Mount Everest Moment on the peak. 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down.
11 Jan 2014....GPS Distance 27th Street to Summit exactly 5.0 roundtrip...Elevation Gain 27th to Summit is 2086 feet.

Date Climbed: May 29, 2010
Climbed in a party of about 20 friends and family. Left the top of 27th street in a light rain, then hail hit while in Taylor Canyon, snow started falling on us while we were in the switchbacks, and it was warm and sunny when we got to the peak. We continued on in to Malan's Basin and checked out the remnants of the resort. Warm and sunny all the way back. Fun day!

Date Climbed: Apr 30, 2010
Oh what a difference a month makes.
Went up Waterfall Canyon, then followed the chute to the right (south and then east) of the waterfall, then north to the ridge. From there we found the trail down (north-east) to the river that supplies the waterfall.
There was just a little bit of snow along the river, but the trail was fairly visible. Followed it east into Malan's Basin, then up (north-west) to the peak, and down the switchbacks.
A great hike!

I went up with a friend and his 16 and 14 year-old children. The plan was to repeat the hike that we did on July 31st of last year, where we went up into the Basin from the Peak, and then down Waterfall Canyon.
We began the hike at 3:00 p.m., got to the summit by 5:00, and should have turned around. :) Instead we went into the summit, and everything was covered in snow. Go figure. ;)
We tried to follow the river down, but that was where the snow was the deepest, so we scrambled up, over, and through slightly less-deep snow and brambly trees and brush until I found the top of the waterfall . . . at about 8:00. There was a lovely view of the sunset, which I don't recommend seeing. :)
We couldn't remember how to get over to the Waterfall chute, as the trail (if there was a trail) was covered, and so we ended up turning around and following our tracks back to the Basin, the Peak, and the switchbacks. Did I mention the snow?
I made it off the mountain at 11:15. It was kind of cold, but we were in good spirits, had flashlights, warm clothes, and plenty of water and food. It was a good adventure!
