Mank?

Been thinking about this brilliant ;) idea for an album for a while. Today's thread on Supertopo Forum kind of solidified my determination to undertake this momentous effort.

So here it is - show SP the shittiest piece (fixed or placed by you) you had to rely on while climbing.....free, aid, ice, rock....whatever tickle your fancy. Ideally it's stuff you actually relied on & not shit you saw on a nearby route.

Nice!

Also, look at this beautiful online catalog (awesome!!):

My mank

Just looked at you posting of the East Butt of Middle Cathedral and it brought back some memories from when I climbed it ten or fifteen years ago. From that posting I ended up here. One of the most vivid memories of that climb was getting off route, chewing up practically all of my gear and , in (stupid) desperation setting up a hanging belay on one big nut. When my partner got to me I said, "Don't look. Don't ask any questions. Just take the rack and go find a nice spot to belay from." Unfortunately, no pictures were taken. Thank goodness for Yosemite cracks and granite!

Good idea

I'm going to keep this in mind on future climbs - I've used some pretty funky looking gear.

Re: Good idea

THanks AJones - yeah, I'd guess you too must've seen your share of crap pro on routes :)

Gear just wasn't there!

Not about gear, more about the lack of it.
Imagine the look of suprise on Lisa's face when she topped out of a sea cliff route she seconded at Pembrokeshire in Wales! The best belay I could come up with was walking back across the field about 10 metres and sitting down. Luckily I'm heavier than her, even luckier, she didn't fall!!

Love this album.

Being an old timer, I have seen more mank than I could possibly remember. I just wish I had a camera, and thought of taking photos of them. Cameras were very large and heavy and they would get in the way of climbing. Digital cameras are heaven sent for climbers.
Very creative album.

Re: Love this album.

Thanks Marc. I'm thinking about re-naming the album as I kind of think "Mank" sounds negative. I had two gentlemen mention (not unkindly) that the stuff they placed during their FA back in circa 1940s-50s & I found and included here was the best that they could afford at the time. I'll probably modify to "interesting gear placements" or something.

Sounds like

a good idea. But, those gentlemen shouldn't have been offended.
I have climbed walls in Yosemite that have nothing but "mank".
I was happy to have mank, mank or not. One time two of us ended up rapping off of a single "Chiounard Arrow" piton, without which we would have been in deep trouble, or still up there.

Brilliant

What a brilliant idea - MANK! I used to rappel off 1-inch webbing after jamming the knots in cracks -- I hated to leave hardware behind. Wish now I had taken photos of those rappel anchors.

Re: Brilliant

thank you very much - if you DO happen to find a shot or two of the junk you've seen out there, be sure & post up here.
