Moomaw Glacier

Moomaw Glacier

While more of a "permanent slowly moving/calving snowfield," Moomaw Glacier (call it what you will) is an intriguing landmark below Eagles Beak.

Is...

it officially a glacier? I was looking at the possibility of hiking to it in a few weeks (if the stress fracture in my spine doesn't end up killing my San Juans trip).

Re: Is...

Errr...I don't know the definitive answer to that, Bob. Most of us in Colorado giggle at the notion of these snow fields being called glaciers. On the other hand, many of the RMNP "glaciers" do indeed exhibit glacier behavior, including cravassing, downhill movement, etc. On the other hand, some say the presence of ice (vs. purely snow) separates a glacier from a snowfield. I don't know.

It's called Moomaw Glacier. It's either a very small glacier or a snowfield. I'm no scientific authority on the topic, and you'll surely get various opinions on this.

Good luck with your back - yikes!

Sarah
