The courtship of Eddy's summit.
From Park Creek PCT. Slept at the TH. Very smoky in the morning. Visibility only a quarter mile. Cleared a little by the time I got to the top but Shasta was just a dim silhouette. Good spring coming out of the hillside about a quarter mile before the PCT meets the Deadfall Lakes Trail

This was part of a trip pursuing county high points for an itinerary that ended up (adaptability and all that) including Modoc, Lassen, Siskiyou, Lake/Colusa, Glenn, Mendocino, Butte, Tehama, Humboldt, & Trinity counties. (As it happens, Siskiyou -- Mt. Shasta -- was the primary objective on this tour, and it was the only unsuccessful summit attempt.)
Well that drive from Salmon Mountain the night prior was certainly something. It was paved the entire way, but it was just wide enough for one vehicle with a wall of rock on one side and a sharp dropoff on the other. Every occasion I met an oncoming vehicle was a little shot of terror.
My original intention was to start at the PCT trailhead — but when I got there mid morning, it was a hive of activity and I did not care to contend with all that. So I headed down the road to the Deadfall Meadows trailhead and started from there.
Although there were a few other vehicles here, I did not encounter anyone until after crossing the PCT. From there I met several parties. The lakes were just gorgeous and I could not resist stopping to filter some water and savor them for 15 minutes.
At the summit I met an older gentleman who said he was up looking for a particular flower; the name escapes me now. He had flash cards of photos of various flowers in his pack that he showed me. We visited for a while before he descended and I had the summit to myself. It was perfectly calm, and the stadium view of Shasta was spellbinding, along with Lassen Peak on the horizon.
The summit register is in an old foundation pit in a black PVC tube. I found a survey marker next to the old wooden frame but no benchmark.
Up in 2:00, 30 min @ summit, 1:30 down.

A grueling and incredibly rewarding climb
This was a very grueling and rewarding climb!
I started from the PCT Parks Creek Summit trailhead (following this route: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mount-eddy-trail-via-pct-at-parks-creek--2). The first hour or so takes you to Deadfall Creek. There are a few gnarly portions about halfway through this hike when the path narrows and is rocky and there are steep drop offs to your right. Just look straight ahead and focus.
Another hour takes you to the last sign before the Mt Eddy trail breaks off to the left. It's a very grueling hike to the top of the mountain and takes longer than you think. There are many switchbacks. Everyone was right: Mount Shasta comes into brilliant view literally a handful of paces before you reach the summit.
Coming down from the summit back to the last sign was the hardest part for me. I went very very gingerly and could not have done it without hiking poles. (Hiking shoes are also a must.)
The weather was great - it was a little cold at the top and I was glad I had a light jacket I could put on or off as needed. It took me 3:40 to ascend and 3:05 to descend for a RT time of 6:45. I had to rush on the descent because I wanted to make it back to town before dark.
The road that takes you from Weed to the trailhead - 42N17 - also ascends rapidly in elevation with no guardrails. I would not want to be on that road after dark.

Cold, wet, and almost whiteout conditions
Was a good hike that took me sub 4 hours. Was either raining or snaining the whole time depending on elevation. Kinda bummed I didn't get to see the views but have been up to Castle Lake and it's surrounding "summits" enough to see the landscape.
Yup it is definitely real windy at the saddle to the summit.

Deadfall Creek TH
Third peak for the day after hiking up Brokeoff Mountain and Lassen Peak.
A day after summiting Shasta, we hiked up Mount Eddy to see Shasta's west facing slopes. This is one of my favorite hikes in the U.S. A well-maintained trail to the expansive summit takes you past a series of meadows and lakes. Trail was almost completely clear of snow.
This is a great hike for several reasons. The Deadfall Lakes are a welcome sight on the return and a great place for a swim! I like the largest middle lake but the upper lake is also suitable. The hike is about 3000 feet elevation gain if you wander off trail a bit like I do. Pretty easy going on a nice trail until you reach upper Deadfall Lake where the switchbacks take you to the top and some amazing views of Mt. Shasta and also of the Trinity Alps and the Marble/Russian Wilderness. About 5 hours round trip...10 miles or so total...with the mandatory swim and a little exploring around the lakes! Easy access from the PCT intersection which is acessed from I-5 to Stewart Springs Rd...maybe 12 miles or so from the freeway exit?

37 peaks in 19 days
There was bad weather for weeks in WA so Heather and I drove through OR, CA, NV, UT, and ID. We climbed 37 peaks in 19 days. I soloed McLoughlin on the second morning and we hiked up Mount Eddy later that afternoon. I found an obsidian spear point on Mount Eddy. trip report
It was hot outside and I thought the final 1000' and summit were fairly boring. However, the views were good (especially of Mount Shasta), and I would totally camp at one of the upper Deadfall Lakes if given the opportunity in the future.

Frozen lakes, icy roads, brisk wind chill, but not much snow. An enjoyable outing with the dogs.

Clouded out but still beautiful hike.
Hiked while on pct. Nike hike beautiful area. Tons of wildflowers and lakes in area.
First day of three day COHP trip, easy walk up trail via Deadfall Lakes, paved road to TH. Only bummer was that we couldn't see Shasta due to cloud cover. Finished early so bagged Mt. Ashland in Oregon en route to Grants Pass for the night. TR is HERE.

Deadfall Lakes TH
Took the Deadfall Lakes Trail to the junction with the PCT and the Sisson-Callahan Trail. Followed the Sisson-Callahan Trail past several Deadfall lakes up onto the South Ridge. Encounted some snow on the ground between the last lake and the South Ridge. Followed the Mount Eddy Trail up the South Ridge to the summit. I found a reference marker, but could not find the Mt Eddy Benchmark nor any registry on the summit ridge. Spotted a bear running from a meadow ahead of me on my descent to the trailhead.
Climbed Eddy because it's close to home and friends raved about the view. Unfortunately, the only day I could get away was foggy, rainy, and the view from the summit extended just barely further than my arm.
Loved the hike, otherwise, though. Looking to go back soon on a sunnier day.

Great afternoon hike, beautiful alpine lakes. One of my favorite outings, got to swim in one of the lakes right at the base of mt. eddy....was glorious to swim in there after descending the peak!
