Post holing in well over four feet of snow...there was a halfway decent snow pack below the fresh layer, which lent some support, but the three days prior to our attempted ascent on Elbert, the Sawatch range had continuously received several feet of snow. Avalanches Conditions for the range at the time were listed as"considerable". Mount Elbert 2008
