Is it just me,or have we became a society with
a communication tower and bldg.
on every summit? Seems like the
'communications' business would
be a good business to get into.

Re: Is it just me,It isn't just you. Telephone poles along our highways are being replaced by microwave towers on our mountain tops. Of course there are all kinds of radio systems for emergency response agencies, and FAA control systems, and cell phone towers, and ...........

Re: Is it just me,Of course the time will come when towers are no longer needed for communications and then all these structures / towers / etc will become
artifacts that future generations will puzzle over. Many have roads that have helped access in rather inhospitable places (think desert peaks)

peak called Bronco Butte in AZ that I had
desired to climb. There's a radio tower
on its summit, but all the maintenance is
done from a helicoper. Communications must
be a very expensive and lucrative business!

Yes, many peaks are like that. Mount Elsworth in the Henry Mountains is a remote and beautiful class 3 peak with no trails anywhere on it's slopes, but has a communications tower on top. The mountain next to it is here if you want to see what the peaks look like. What really burns me up is that the communication company at one time put a no trespassing sign on the access road even though there is no private land for miles and miles and miles around. Luckily last time I was there the sign was gone.
There aren't even any towns around to get any cell service???? I assume it's only purpose is for the houseboats on Lake Powell that "need" cell service.
In the same mountain range, Mount Ellen South, the second highest peak in the range also has a small helicopter serviced tower on it was well.

Communication conglomerates! I think
the tower on Bronco Butte is within a
National Forest, and the tower's purpose
is for emergency short-wave radio use
for County Mounties and SAR personnel.
Meanwhile, I'm still looking for a route
up to Bronco Butte's summit, without having to dodge miles of cactus. Did you hear about
the 'rabid bobcat' in the Santa Rita's near
Tucson, AZ?? Please CLICK for the link.
