Ski hut trail
Weather was great, but snow was almost none existant:(
Other than that, had good views and got to see some interesting stuff, two gliders, and some idiots in a 4x4 coming down the lower portion of the backbone trail=0 I hiked up with great people for a great ending at the Baldy Lodge for an early dinner.

Many Times
Been up seven times. Baldy Village or Other Devil's Backbone(via the North) are interesting alternatives to the usual routes.
Been up many times mostly on the bear creek trail. It's a great trainer trail.

Snowy Baldy
...Only made it to 9600ft...Why is this trail so poorly marked again?? Two weekends in a row I have lost the trail after the SkiHut and have run out of daylight with tons of gas still in the tank. My GPS track looks like a lightning bolt.
All and all a great day to be on the mountain. I only saw 4 other people and nobody made it to the top as far as I can tell(I was hoping to follow their footsteps).
Lots of snow, even all the way down on Manker Flats. Lots of people down there enjoying it.

This is winter?!? (Bear Creek)
Even for Southern California, the conditions on Feb. 10, 2007 were absurdly un-winterish. Clouds early, but then the sun shone for the rest of our trip, and temperatures were mostly t-shirt level (although the top had a chilly, 20-30mph wind). Snow on the trail was limited to 15'-diameter patches you could step over or around -- I wore trail runners the whole way, and felt awfully silly for packing 7 pounds of mountain boots & crampons in my pack. Hiking steadily but not especially fast, we summitted in 3:30, and descended in about 2:10. The descent is a bit of a quad-punisher.

up ski hut trail, down Devil's Backbone
climbed Baldy with locals luciano136 and gigamike via a cool loop hike. This felt like a popular CO 14er in terms of the crowd as there were quite a few folks on a marginal day. We got through the backbone w/o having to breakout axe and crampons.

I'd be curious to know if anyone summited today. If so, they wanted it more than I did. I've probalby climbed Baldy 12 time in the last 6 months, but I've never seen wind like today. I'd guess 80 mph gusts.

Testing new Bivy
Started at 2pm, summited 7:30. The plan was to test new bivy's and healed broken foot.
left axes and crampons in car. Thermometor read below 20 degrees above sierra hut. Winds at Summit where 30 knots, a guess. dropped down 300 feet and spent night, marginally comfortable.
Bivy's and foot both performed well.

Sunny to clouds in 5 minuets flat!
I started hiking at about 8:20am there was little snow on the trail all the way to the Sierra Club Ski Hut. Past the bowl the snow begins, it's very icy and continues to the top of the ridge. I reached the top at about 2pm and then descended along the Devils Backbone trail to the Baldy ski area; from there I took the service road all the way down to my car at Manker Flats. I don't think that the temperature ever got above 40 degrees. Plus the winds on the ridges and on the summit could push you around a little bit. It was a long day, but very fun.
Great Hike anytime of year. Devils backbone is great, and really fun when it's windy. Bear Creek is one long march to the top. Go another way. Ski bowl is fun snow climb. Watch out for skiiers, boarders, and crazy glissaders. Avalanche danger is a big concern on this route during winter.

From the Village
We took the Bear Creek trail up (from the village) and down the backbone to the Notch. Steep most of the way, but didnt see another sole till near the top.

8/18/07 Went up via the Harwood trail(Register Ridge) tagged Mt Harwood on the way, Nice calm sunny day on hte summit.

An absolutely gorgeous day on Baldy. Took the Ski-Hut trail up and the Backbone down. A little snow on the trail in parts, but nothing we didn't feel comfortable with not having any winter gear.

Ski hut trail
This trip was a pleasant surprise. Even though it is very close to the city the area here is quite wild and beautiful. Its also a steep-ass trail, good views, lots of connecting trails for long milage if you want it.

Didn't have enough time...
Only made it to the ridge above Baldy Bowl because I didn't have enough time to get to the top and make it all the way back down so that I could be at work at 2pm. I'm going back on Monday and Wednesday, this is the begining of my training for Mt. Shasta and Mt. Rainier.

Devil's Backbone speed ascent
3h 48m! We ran up and down the backbone, and it was fun! Finally got the three saintly mountains of socal! Worst view of the three,a really smoggy day.After spending a year training in the San Gorgonio wilderness, this was a walk in the park!

All Alone
Hiked up late Friday night and spent the night on the summit. Beautiful full moon. Didn't even need to turn my headlamp on. Didn't see a soul until about 9:00 a.m. on Saturday when the day-hikers began congregating.

Mt. Baldy
This was my first mountain above 10k ft. All-in-all, it went well. I climbed the devils backbone trail after mistakenly going directly up the ski slopes, which were quite steep. At times they were over 35% grade. Not having done much climbing before this, I started at a blistering pace....progressively slowing until the lodge at the top of the first ski slope.
After that, all went well. I summitted and was back at my car in about 4 hours. I basically ran down the hill because I was afraid that my rental car would be locked in the parking area.
