Top of North America  Sucess!

Second attempt on Whitney Summit. Last year tried the Mountaineers route, but it was too snowy and sunny at the same time, and got sun poisoning on the way up. This time went for the main trail and summited no problem!

MR  Sucess!

Climbed with a couple of guys from SMG (Dakin and Leath). Stuck to the left side of the main chute then climbed the second chute on the north side. Lots of loose rock in the gullies but manageable.

Fun Scramble  Sucess!

The class 3 scramble of the Mountaineers Route (and parts of the North Fork Lone Pine Creek Trail) is a definite superior choice over the 22 miles and endless switchbacks of the Mt. Whitney Trail. I enjoyed the challenge, scenery and good time with my son as we bagged our first CA 14er and Lower-48 HP. That and a couple days in Yosemite to get acclimated were a great culmination to a month of "getting as high as we can" (Elbert, Massive, then Whitney)! If we can get Rainier next summer we will have the top five highest peaks in the Lower-48.

Dayhike on Main Trail  Sucess!

Had a lot of fun with this one after wanting to do it for a long time. Left Portal at 4:30, summit at 11:15 - went to do Keeler Needle afterword but the last couple of steps were a little more exposure than I wanted so I backed off 7 feet from that summit. Enjoyable day, back to the car just after 5:00 PM, and back home in Tracy before midnight.

Second Time from Portal  Sucess!

Better views (if that's possible) second time and five years after my previous climb. Adding Crooks Peak and Discovery Pinnacle this time were fun diversions. Had great compadres to hike with too!

Leisure  Sucess!

Did a quick run up to Muir after hauling pack to trail camp. Got back to camp for a bit of sleep then did a leisurely ascent to Whitney with the rest of the group. Also bagged Langley earlier in the week. Fun week in the Eastern Sierra.

Perfect  Sucess!

Left @ 4:30am. Summit at 10:30am. Perfect weather. Hey, don't worry about getting a day-use permit. There are plenty available the day before you need it. There are about 30-50% cancellations, and that puts 30-50 permits back into the pool by 3pm the day before. The ranger told me that there are several unused permits every day. I drove down from Bend, OR and did not have a concern getting a permit. Also, there is not fee for a permit obtained the day before it is needed.

15th HP  Sucess!

Did this with my brother (his first time peakbagging). I was actually expecting the whole thing to be a lot harder, but my feet/legs didn't even hurt. My brother thought it was a lot harder though. Went up to the top in a day and then camped at trail camp. Finished off with pancakes at the trailhead.

8th summit the hard way  Sucess!

Ran from Onion Valley to Whitney portal. Made the side trip to Whitney but did not have it in me to do Muir too.

48 miles and over 15,000' of gain in 23 hrs = ouch!

Bear!  Sucess!

Via Standard Route. Had bear encounter in parking lot before starting. He was sneaking up on my wife’s side of the car when we were getting ready. Was able to shoo it away. Do NOT leave your pack or any food unguarded. He was patrolling for a quick steal. Use the bear boxes.

Re: Bear!

My partner and I were sitting in his truck trying to get some rest before our climb. Had a bear climb into the bed of the truck with us in the cab. At first I thought my partner was just moving around trying to get comfortable. He though it was me moving around. It was so dark that it took us a while to realize that is was not either one of us. When we shined a flash light into the bed, we saw a small black bear just on the other side of the window with my water bottle in it's mouth. Pretty sure he was more scared then us by the way he leaped out of the truck.
