Solo day hike. My wife dropped me off at 3am and we met up again at 2pm for an 11 hour round trip. Lots of people as usual, even one guy who changed into a suit just before the top to make a statement.

Attempted to climb Mt Whitney by Mountaineers Route but turned around in the final chute to the summit. Camped at Iceberg Lake at night. Climbed mostly solid rock in the gully, reached notch around 10 AM. It was windy and cold up there and we decided to turn around because of the worsening conditions. It started snowing as we descended the MR and white-out a little later when we were descending Clyde Meadows. Although we didn't reach the summit, it was a most memorable climb; my first in the Sierra Nevadas and also a first of all sorts for my friend Akshay Damarla [ his trip report ]

We had a three day, two night permit for the trip. This made for a very relaxing and enjoyable trip to the summit and back. On the first day we left the trailhead around 10:30 AM and made our way up to the trail camp in about 4 hours with a 25 minute lunch break. We had half of the day to enjoy after setting up camp and we regret not having our fishing gear--rumor has it that Consultation Lake has the biggest fish around. We found this stretch of the hike to be the most demanding part of the whole trip, only because of the 40 lbs. packs. The next morning we leisurely got up and hit the trail around 7:30 AM. The trail to the summit was smooth sailing and required little to no rest for us. It took us about 3 hours and 20 minutes to reach the Summit at a very brisk pace. We strolled back to Trail Camp in about 3 hours.

All in all, we thought that the Mt. Whitney Trail was not much of a challenge for avid hikers/backpackers, especially for those of us who are lucky enough to have the advantage of living at 6,300 feet in elevation and not requiring much in the way of acclimatization. Doing it all in a day would have been more of a challenge. Doing it in two days is very practical. Having three days like we did, took the challenge out of it, but made for a very enjoyable get-away with little pressure.

This was my third trip up Whitney, and this time I led 3 adults and 4 kids on their first ascent. This was a one day trip, starting around 4 AM. Everyone made the summit and the weather was perfect, not a cloud in sight.

However, 3 members of our group, including 2 of the kids, developed serious altitude sickness right after leaving the summit, and had to stay at outpost camp with 2 kind doctors who let them share their tent. One of the girls was airlifted off the mountain by search and rescue helicopter the next morning, and luckily recovered quickly.

On Friday August 19, 2005 Laurel and Lou summitted the East Buttress of Whitney. Climb took 6 hours. Lou's route finding was impeccable. First time on the summit for him and I had summitted previously via the Mountaineers Route April of 2003 and 2004. Descent was more an adventure than the climb. Made it down to camp by late afternoon, broke down camp and hauled down to Whitney Portal for beer and burgers right before closing. Bee-u-ti-ful weather. whooo wee

On August 28th at 12:15 pm, Bret, Chad, Brandon, Nicole and Myself(Kenn) Summited Mt Whitney. It was Mine and Nicole's first attempt and was successful, it was the others 2nd successful trip. The weather and scenery was absolutley beautiful and couldn't have asked to be in better company than the friends I was with. We left Portal at 1 am and arrived back at 8 pm. It was a trip I will never forget and plan to do again someday. Thanks to everyone who offered advice on how to make my first summit attempt a sucess.

A good climb. Still a decent amount of snow in the chute. The Notch was clear and lots of fun - traversed around the North Face on return, some snow there too.

Um, climbing at altitude is hard. Especially when you haven't eaten anything. My first technical alpine climb (2nd on trad) and it wrecked me.

Hiked the main trail solo. Started at 3am from the portal and made it to the top about ~9 hours later. I carried way to much stuff. When I weighed my pack at the scale it was 30+ pounds. On the way back helped out an older gentleman. I could have pushed on alot faster then I did ,but he had a bum knee and his friends had left him. The total time down was about 8 hours. All in all it was an awesome hike. I also spent the entire week in the area between camping at the portal for 3 days to, 3 days at Lone Pine camp ground.

Beautiful day for a hike. Left portal at 6 AM and reached summit at 11 AM. Left summit at noon and on my descent, passed a few people who I had passed on the way up. One guy from Ohio wasn't looking so good, I hope he survived. When I got to the bottom I checked my watch and it was 4 PM straight up. The next step I took my left knee, Which had been operated on last year, went out and I had to hobble to my car. Next year I plan on bringing some friends to keep me company.

Made this climb with two other friends. One decided to try climbing the face of Whitney w/o ropes. Needless to say he did not make it to the top, but did get to witness SAR come and rescue him. I, on the other hand got to climb to the top twice that trip, due to the unneeded excitement. A memorable trip, to say the least.

Day hike from the Portal to Iceberg Lake and then up the Mountaineer's Route. No need for ice axe or crampons, we had left them in the car and were fine crossing a few snow patches in the chute without them. Went down the main trail and did Muir on the way out. Great day hike!

We took the Whitney trail and camped at trail camp. We got up early the next day and started hiking at 5 AM and made it to the summit by 8 AM. It started to get very crowded while we descended from the summit, so I am very glad we got up there early! Also, the weather usually gets worse as the day goes on. This was my first 14er and I hope to do more!

The Mountaineer's was a great route. We were a little worried about the weather going up, but the clouds cleared as we approached the notch. An easy traverse later, we were standing on the summit.

My second time to the top, and the third 14'er in a month. Dark clouds were building fast, so I didn't stay long at the summit.
