Mt. Pennell, 11,400 feet, the neighbor just to the south of Mt. Ellen that is a worthy peak worth climbing. More difficult to get to but worth the effort. Mt. Pennell is the second highest peak in the Henry's. This picture was taken from near Pennellen Pass. The Horn is the structure in the foreground and Mt. Hillers can be seen to the left of Mt. Mt Pennell

Unfortunately a lightning fire burned most of the vegetation off of the east side of Mt. Pennell during the winter (I believe) of 2006. Very, very sad, like losing an old friend. All the hidden nooks and crannies in the area are now open to erosion and the roads that lead there. It will take at least 20 years to regrow.

Re: Mt Pennell

I'm saddened to hear of the fire devastation.
When we went through there, the road was a mess on the northeast side due to a smaller fire that had occurred the year before but to think that all the forest/bushes are gone is indeed a sad situation. I really want to return to the Henry's and explore some more.
Thanks for your commentary.
