What Tomek once mentioned:
On 2 July 1939 Nanda Devi East was first climbed via south ridge by Jakub Bujak and Janusz Klarner.
The other expedition members, Adam Karpiński and Stefan Bernadzikiewicz, attempted to climb the nearby Tirsuli (7161 m) but died in an avalanche on 18 or 19 July.

Untitled CommentFantastic page. Great information. The lack of photos shows how few people have been there! Man, I'd love to visit that area some day...

Untitled CommentIt is a mountain of intrigue. I first read the story of the tragedy many years ago and am rereading it again now. It is quite a mountain story!

Untitled CommentNo problem. It's a great page for an amazing mountain. I hope it opens up to westerners soon--it's at the top of my "someday" list.

Nanda Devi radioactive? An interesting article in today's Seattle Post Intelligencer about a spy mission to plant a radioactive surveillance device on the summit. This might be worth linking to in the Overview section.
