Approach

Start from Virginia Lakes trailhead. Follow trail upstream, until it ascends the ridge at the head of the drainage. This is the northeast ridge of Excelsior Mountain. Get off trail on top of the ridge before the trail descends into Green Creek drainage on the other side of the ridge.

Route Description

Follow the ridge to the left (south), then scramble southwest towards the summit of Excelsior. On the way one must pass by two peaklets. On the way back, make sure do not descend into the wrong canyon. You could be stranded amongst the cliffs in Lundy Canyon.

Essential Gear

Nothing in summer, appropriate back country ski gear in winter. Ice axe and crampons most likely will not be needed.
