Have done this route twice, once in summer of 2002 and once in 2007 shooting for the Ellingwood ridge, not finding the correct trail, so descending the north face couloirs. This remains my favorite Sawatch 14er. The North Face couloirs are some of the most beautiful in Colorado and I would love to do a multi-day across Ellingwood Ridge.

Great Sawatch
This time was the first of the spring, I ditch the skis and boots bc the weight was killing me.
Luckily last spring I skied all spring!

Excellent Trail
Praise to the Fourteener Initiative for all their work on the trail. It is among the most solid and well-defined I have encountered on a Class 2. Scenic trail: we saw 2 rainbows early in the a.m. and there were thousands (literally) of colorful mushrooms spotting the forest floor. The views were awesome too, of course.
Very scenic route, lots of wildflowers and grand views.

Long
In early spring, this route will really test your stamina, it is a killer when it is coverednin snow. I wonder if it is that hard in summer. Well worth it though.

Good day - good trail2 hours and 40 minutes to the summit. There is no way that was only 9 miles. It appears from Google Earth and GPS to be at least 9.5 miles
