Not-So-Colorful X-Cutting Features

Not-So-Colorful X-Cutting Features

This small dryfall is through a cracked flow. Curiously, the grayish rock persists along the cracks, while the bulk is altered pink or ochre. Originally, there was a great, colorful photo here, which I got from a friend who thought then colors were original. Alas, I revisited my 4-year-old photos, and think this is the same site -- no bright blues, just grays. ;^( (original caption:In the upper part of Cleopatra wash, there are some colorful, water-worn exposures of hydrothermal alteration in the breccias. This photo is courtesy of Nick N (and he says he didn't retouch the colors!).)

Re: amazing!

I wish I could take credit, but Nick N took the photo. I have some from the same site, but was too focused on close-ups.

Where

exactly is this picture taken? We'd love to see it when we next visit!

Re: Where

That area was in the first part of the Cleopatra hike, perhaps a mile or so from the parking area. Nick took that particular picture; the colors were probably "helped" by a slight drizzle.

I just went back to look at my original photos, and now think this supposedly true-color photo was gamma-altered. See the caption. Soory about the folks who voted for this photo based on those bluish rocks! See the notes in the new caption.

If you can manage the trip over to Kendall and back, you will get the full variety.

I think the rock colors are actually more intense under an overcast sky.
