Approach

You go to Heiligenblut. From there you go over the Glocknerstrasse, a famous highway, to the Frans Jozef Hohe were you can park. You must pay the road. You can come there by bus also. Then you go to the Oberwalderhutte 2973m through the new tunnels which were build because of falling rocks from Freiwandspitz.

We went in Oberwalderhutte and we had to pay a "ticket" for the route to the hut?!?! I have never seen something like that!

Route Description

You start ascent from the Oberwalderhutte and you cross the glacier on the east side of the Johannisberg and come to the pass Obere Ă–denwinkelscharte, 3228m. Then you start climbing on the NW ridge and over some steep rock walls you come to the summit.

If you cross the glacier from the Oberwalderhutte in lower part you will have some problems with some crevasses if they are not looking out from the snow. Soo it is better if you cross it in higher part.

Essential Gear

Rope, helmet, ice pick, crampons
