Re: Excellent

Thanks, I made it back when that area was not too popular. I was exasperated with the proliferation of the SP style, with a page for every peak, route, etc. It was such a point-grubbing game. I felt a lot of folks were going to that area and not seeing the forest for the trees.

I stopped contributing to SP, because the rise of sites like peakbagger.com mean that people will just download the gpx file for the trip. E.g., folks at SP thanked the people who put the gpx file for the Currant Mt route on peakbagger, apparently not even checking to see if there was a Currant page. Ironically, the peakbagger route cited was close to mine. I knew then that I was done. There are lots of peaks that I would now prefer to keep off the radar.

Re: Excellent

First, I'd like to say that I have maximum respect for your accomplishments in the desert. In my research, there seem to be only a couple dudes that everyone else references. You and Bob Burd stand out as the front runners.

I understand your frustration. Technological trends seem to be changing the way people hike. I've seen people walking along staring at their GPS unite while ignoring what's around them. Our whole culture seems to be going that direction.

Perhaps I'm old school because I like to have route descriptions and a few photos for the crux areas. The way I see it, if people are making pages just for points or climbing peaks for a list sake only and not for enjoyment, then screw them. They've lost sight of what's important.

Having said that, I still view Summitpost as the greatest collection of route beta in the world. I like to draw from that archive and I like to contribute as well. I will make pages for The Sentinel and Hamblin unless someone beats me to it. These new pages would integrate better if I could attach them to your master page. But if you are against changing it, I can respect that.

Thanks for all your contributions to climbing peaks over the years and I wish you the best.

Re: Excellent

You can change the structure if you want. I've taken shorter variations on the Sentinel route at least 6 times since then.

Well Done

You've done a great job on the research and documentation of this area. My Master's work was on the northern portion of the dissected cone, from Echo Bay to Boathouse Cove. Glad to see the area getting some visitors. If there is additional interest in taking a deeper dive on the geology, my 1985 thesis work is available on line. Googling "Hamblin Cleopatra Thompson" will also pull up a more recent paper that was prepared by Drs. Barker and McDowell (at UT-Austin), Smith (at UNLV) and me on aspects of the igneous petrology.

Re: Well Done

Thanks, I haven't looked at that page in a while! I've been up most of those peaks many times since, there is a much faster way to Sentinel a pull-off west of Redstone picnic area.
