According to the Tacoma Public Library...

Tumtum Mountain (in Clark County) was named as such because of the Native American word for "heart" and the fact that (at least to early settlers in the area) the mountain has the appearance of an upside-down heart.

Re: According to the Tacoma Public Library...

Thanks. There is an Internet page (not the Tacoma Public Library) that makes the same reference but it did not quote a source so I was dubious. If you have a source, please provide it and I'll read it and/or work it into the Overview.

By the way, the upside down heart shape could apply to any conical mountain, could it not?

Re: According to the Tacoma Public Library...

I found it online, myself, from the "Northwest Room" of the Tacoma Public Library website. It says the reference was the following:
(Allworth, p. 223)
SOUNDEX CODE: T535 M535
------------

I personally thought it looked like an upside-down ice cream cone, but to each their own.

Re: According to the Tacoma Public Library...

I guess what I'm saying is for a mountain to be named, in essence, "Heart Mountain" is too easy and therefore dubious. The tumtum word has to be a reference to something else, something more abstract, which is why the "spirit" definition could work. Like how the Seahawks had tumtum today.
