Welcome back to the world of gainful employment! Your tale of the cell phone reminds me of the jolt I always get when I turn that thing back on after a hike...or a few days in the backcountry. (In your case I completely understand why you had it on!). If I have it with me I always have it off, or prefered locked in my glove compartment. Powering up the cell phone is the reminder that I am leaving the wilderness behind, and am returning to the real world.
Thanks! Alas I don't have that discipline...I usually keep it off to save batteries but usually can't resist the temptation to send a few pics/check facebook from the summit. It's surprising where you sometimes find yourself with reception.
Been doing all the stuff between SLC and Wendover near I-80...almost went to do Notch yesterday actually but ended up climbing something else. How was the west side of Worthington?
You know, you have both shamed and inspired me, Pat. For years, I've dreamed about getting the hell out of here. Stable job, bad economy, marriage, kids...all serve as excuses to stay put where the paychecks are. But I admire your decision to just pack up and head for Utah, and it weighs on me as I think about the fact that I really need to do something like that and get much closer to the places that I love.
Thanks! It was tough for me to pull the plug too, but I'll tell you this, (and depending on where you end up), there's definitely a trade off. The outdoors are spectacular, but you'll be surprised at finding yourself missing things you didn't expect to miss, or even those things you do expect to miss, missing them more than you expected (if that makes any sense). I'll bet though the one thing you won't miss is the Northern VA traffic

I see the trade - off ..The high desert is great, but you gotta maintain that gainful
employment to stay afloat and become somewhat independent.
Guess it depends on your personal needs, and what position you
already assume on the social ladder ..
I would rather climb mountains than a stupid ideological ladder.
