Offutt Island Crags

Offutt Island Crags

A short distance downstream from the Angler's Inn put-in, paddlers reach Offutt Island, on the right side of which is a Class 2 rapid. These crags are on the eastern end of the island, and I found some enjoyable scrambling in the Class 4 and easy Class 5 range. Harder opportunities exist. The climbs are about 50'. Offutt Island is non-NPS land, but there are no signs on it indicating that it is private property. This view is from the Potomac River. C&O Canal National Historical Park, MD-- August 2010

Offutt Island

"Offutt Island is non-NPS land, but there are no signs on it indicating that it is private property."

It is non-NPS, but it was taken over by the Nature Conservancy in Maryland a few years ago: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5154768510454899270

I read on the site that they do not allow people on it. I was hoping to go since my husband's ancestors used to own it! (Offutts). We were in DC in July and didn't even know that that place was so close. I hope to go next time!

Re: Offutt Island

Thanks for the information. I will do some looking into it soon. If it is indeed privately owned, they ought to make it more apparent, for I have seen people on the island a number of times.
