Our bivy spot at ~13,700',... | [ Sizes: Orig | Small | Thumb ] |
Our bivy spot at ~13,700', right below the notch between East and West Horns. We did not have sleeping bags, and ended up squeezing into one sack after our space blankets ripped and it got well below freezing. The warm morning sun was more than welcome. In the background, you can see the Palisades. What you cannot see is a huge drop off on the right side of the photo, few feet away from our little ledge - July 11, 2004

Hasn't voted | Actually, it was not too bad. Definitely a great adventure to remember. We were planning to bivy on the mountain, just not en route :) | | Posted Jul 14, 2004 5:34 pm |

Voted 10/10 | Was this on the "Long Twisting Rib"? | | Posted Jul 22, 2004 9:31 pm |

Hasn't voted | Yep! The actual rib (aka North Arete) is 50-70' above our bivy ledge on the left side of the photo. | | Posted Jul 22, 2004 9:35 pm |

Voted 10/10 | On the tableland above, people have been known to celebrate with Charles Mitchel! | | Posted Jul 22, 2004 10:50 pm |

Hasn't voted | Heh, I know these people :)
We brought our own bottle of Charles Mitchell port but our group got split up so we could not drink it. Maybe next time, and on a different mountain! | | Posted Jul 26, 2004 8:41 pm |

Voted 10/10 | with the exception of the bivy sacks, this looks suspiciously familiar... doesn't seem like it should be able to get that cold in California in the middle of the summer, does it??? | | Posted Jul 14, 2004 4:24 pm |

Hasn't voted | It was nuts... I thought my toes and fingers would fall off by that morning :)
Fortunately our bivy spot was strategically located to get the first sunlight. I can only imagine how cold it was during the first winter ascent of NE Ridge (by Warren Harding no less) | | Posted Jul 14, 2004 5:32 pm |

Voted 10/10 | ...enjoy those "shots with a story" behind them (unexpected bivies in particular make for some great stories :). Make me want to go out into the mountains!!
Nice job Misha. | | Posted Jul 22, 2004 7:41 pm |

Hasn't voted | Thanks Radek! This was not entirely unexpected but nevertheless interesting, my very first bivy w/o a sleeping bag in the mountains. Aside from worrying about the frostbite, this was quite enjoyable. Especially right now when I look at it from a comfy chair :) | | Posted Jul 22, 2004 9:38 pm |
| Klenke | Ah yes, the impromptu bivy | |
Voted 10/10 | I've been there and I agree it is much more comfortable reliving it from the comfort of a living room. | | Posted Jul 22, 2004 11:55 pm |
