Approach

The most popular trailhead used for approaching the west ridge is the Colby canyon trail. From the 210 fwy. Drive about 9 1/2 miles up the Angeles crest hwy (hwy 2) past the intersection with the Angeles forest hwy. Continue another 3/4 mile. The trailhead is on your left. Park in the dirt pullout. There is a sign at the trailhead. Follow the Colby canyon trail (12W23) for 2.2 miles to Josephine saddle.

Alternate approach:

Driving up Angeles Crest hwy. as described above, turn left onto Angeles Forest hwy. Park in pullouts on either side of street. The Josephine Peak road (gated) starts across the street from the fire station. Follow the dirt road for 2.5 miles to a point where the road turns left and heads up the north side of Josephine peak. Take the trail to the right (east) for a 1/2 mile to Josephine saddle. Then follow route description. photo

Route Description

From Josephine saddle, Continue north on the Colby canyon trail for about 20 yds. watch for the unmarked Strawberry summit trail on your right. Follow the trail, passing a short section of class 2. Although someone has painted arrows on some of the rocks pointing the way! On top sign the register, and enjoy the view of the ocean(when it's not too smoggy down there).
