Part one of the Monte Vioz... | [ Sizes: Orig | Med | Small | Thumb ] |
Part one of the Monte Vioz summit panorama: Palon de la Mare and Cevedale with Gran Zebru (Königspitze) peeping out in between. On the (slightly tilted horizon are the Ötztal Alps. That atrocious august 2003, I decided to avoid mountains, as I had already been frightened by july. This section was almost entirely covered with snow 15 years ago, and in august one could hardly distinguish any crevasses, at least around the upper sections of glaciers.... | | Posted Jun 16, 2005 4:29 am |

Hasn't voted | What was worse than missing the ice was seeing the torrents come down from these glaciers. The small hanging Vioz Glacier on the southern side - by that time only 300m long - acquired over that length so much water that at its end you had a rushing creek already. Masses of pebbles got loose and tumbled down too. It was frightening. You got the impression that the glacier wouldn't survive another day. Luckily this was the last hot day of that summer. The next days saw heavy rain (and probably + hopefully) some snow at that altitude. | | Posted Jun 16, 2005 4:41 am |

When we woke up the first moning, temperature was already 18° centigrade...at 4 a.m....and 2200 meters. Heavy stonefall from all the ridges around : one could hardly find a safe place to make the first step on Niblé glacier, which is a modest and fast vanishing one. Hopeless...not even good for pictures, as every shape was alterated by that permanent haze all around.
