In front of the peak and a little to the right is the khitsan (Ossetian for a nunatak), a rocky island dividing the two branches of the glacier. We are returning from an early-morning recoinssance trip to the khitsan saddle to scope a potential avy-safe place for our next camp, after a series of freak spring snowstorms made these mountains a veritable avalanche trap.
