Anybody climbed ice in Tyrol this week?

by mvs » Fri Jan 14, 2011 4:52 pm

It's warm as hell...I imagine the ice is gone. I'm thinking specifically about Oetztal, Pitztal and similar valleys.
Thanks,

At the other side of the alps, it's much the same. Was going to go tourskiing again this weekend, but I think I'll just go hiking (Camoghé) instead. Snow will be too soft and last week there already were too much avalanches due to the warm weather.

Makes sense. Here in the north it's hard to find useful hiking opportunities. I'll head for ski touring Saturday...the avalanche danger will decrease from 3 to 2, so certain tours should be reasonable. But Sunday it gets really warm and sunny. My friend and I will exchange the ice screws for quickdraws and hit the rock

Yesterday was quite hard here, as there was a lot of soft snow. Didn't bring any snowshoes, which was a big mistake. Luckily I didn't mind 7 hours of slogging through knee to waist deep snow (as it's good training). But today, djeez. Seemed like it was summer. Nothing was possible and since I don't know anyone here yet, climbing was out of the question. I just sat in the sun at 1700m without a shirt on for three hours.

Wow. Okay we got some great cragging in at the Martinswand/Innsbruck. Exactly, it was like a spring day, maybe early April. The snow was gone on the peaks to at least 500 meters above the Inn valley floor. Up higher it looked like there had been recent snow, maybe from Friday. By 1 pm it was short sleeves time! :D
