Disapearing Votes?

by Josh Lewis » Sun Nov 06, 2011 8:54 am

Now this is not a big deal at all, but my curiosity gets the better of me sometimes which is why I'm posting. I have noticed on a few of my trip reports some votes disappearing. One of them was very recent. Now the reason I ask is because I'm wondering if it's one of two things:
1. Members are "Disappearing"
2. Members suddenly think "I don't like your trip reports". :lol:

Anyone else have this happen. Now I check stuff every now and then so the main reason I even noticed in the first place is I sometimes remember the vote count on something and look back at my tr's to grab a image url to put on some other site. :wink:

Every time you copy an image to another site, a kitten dies.
The strawman is evil and must be punished,

I've not noticed votes disappearing per se, but for years I have noticed scores drifting downwards gradually over time. It may have been either of the two reasons you mention or because someone's power has dropped after deleting something or because a low voter's power has increased. Sometimes I'll cancel votes of 7-9 if I come across them again or alternatively make them a 10 to fit in with the pervasive like/dislike mentality. If something's pretty bad I'll put as much though.

Must be this, we've had some leavings recently when members asked the Elves to delete their accounts.

It's the allmighty algorithm behind the vote count which causes the score erosion over time. Sounds pretty scientific, but that's the way it is, except that nobody understands the science behind the algorithm :D

I wasn't around here in the old days, but I wouldn't take SP's voting system too SERIOUSLY.

As we partake in Life's journey, numbers become more meaningless, as compared to experiencing the Journey itself. :wink:

"And the seasons they go round and round;
And the painted ponies go up and down ..
We're captive on the carousel of time.
We can't return, we can only look, behind
From where we came;
And go round and round and round,
In the circle game ..."

Not that, too! I thought it was just when someone called a Jeep a "car".

As for the vote count: I've noticed it over the years and I think it's, as said, when people have their account deleted. One of my pic's (my top-rated one, but don't look because I'm vote begging here--LOL) even has a "hung" response to lead off the comments because that user was deleted after I responded (too bad, I loved pkfrancev's response of "Kick ass shot!"--who wouldn't?! <G>).

It must've been when Knoback left and now Fletch. BTW anyone knows why Fletch left? Some folks treat this place waaay too seriously...

Fletch left? That explains it. I know it was not "vote erosion" and I know it was not someone "down voting" my report. :wink: Fletch will be missed. :(

Fletch was a good guy. He was always reasonable, had good input, and fun too. Yes, he will be missed.

In the past week, two members with high vote weight and plenty of voting activity asked for their accounts to be deleted. Yes, Fletch was one of them. Both members cited private issues that did not have to do with SP, and time seemed to be of the essence. Fletch was kind enough to have his pages transferred to the Orphanage before he left. The other member never responded to a question if a name change might suffice (he used his real name), so after waiting a week for a reply, I went ahead and honored his request.

FLETCH seemed to be a very well-rounded humorous and intensely knowledgeable fellow, and WILL be missed !

This is NOT a time to PANIC, however. Instead, we should clasp our hands TIGHTER around the campfire.

I should add that I have no reason to believe either is in trouble and do not mean to give anyone that impression. In fact, I do not know the specific personal reasons. One actually invited me for a beer the next time I'm in his area, which suggests he is not trying to disappear from the map.

People have their personal lives outside SP, and sometimes they have a wish or a need to cut ties. It's not my place to question or delay once they make their intentions clear.

I'll miss them and their contributions.
