Everest Fight - Care to Speculate

Anyone care to speculate here? How the Hell do you get in a fight with your sherpas? How the Hell do you get in a fight with a Buddhist?

Everyone on every documentary I see always goes on an on about how terrific and kind they are. All buddhist and loving and stuff. (Maybe it's not all true) I could imagine the climbers being real jerks more likely.

In any case, I'm curious.

I would not want to get in a fight with a sherpa at 7k meters. From my experience at that altitude I'd be like a 90 year old grandma fighting Mike Tyson up there.

I've seen people fight over, literally, "What are you looking at?" "Nothing." "What? You saying I'm nothing?!" -fists fly on crowded train-

I'm certainly not going to point any fingers at any of the people involved. But even if the Sherpa were not at fault, I'd imagine that they probably won't be hired again, which would be unfortunate.

In almost every fight/disagreement (physical or verbal) I've seen or participated in, there is rarely one person who is wholly to blame.

Aplinists Simone Moro, Ueli Steck and Jonathan Griffith involved in the altercation. Details found in this Italian recount translated into English.

It appears the Sherpas were working on the fixed ropes above camp 2 and asked that they not be disturbed until the work was complete.

The climbers respecting their request ascended to the side by 50 feet. Eventually they had to traverse the ropes to reach their tent. This action ignited the dispute.

From Alan Arnette on Facebook

Sigh.

A report was issued by Simone Moro of a fight Friday between Ueli Steck, Moro and the Sherpa fixing rope on the Lhotse Face. Translation . It appears both sides became upset as they felt there was interference with one another during the rope fixing work. While it is serious if in fact blows were exchanged, I would not get too upset by this as it is easy for egos and tempers to get out of control in these compressed environments.

A Sherpa was reported to have been hurt by “falling ice” on Friday but it is not clear this was related to this incident. However, it is now pretty clear that the Sherpas taking a “rest day” day is related to the incident. Hopefully everyone has calmed down and can get back to climbing.

I speculate that there will be a whole heap of speculating..and a scuffle at Camp 2 turning into pages of angst ridden, soul searching commentary on 'What has Everest become" completely out of proportion to what happened.

still now it has stuck in my brain. Contestants in down suits in a MH Space Station..slo-mo grappling style. Havent figured it our ethics wise yet if crampons should be on or off.

Thank goodness Mount Everest has been climbed. Now we can get on with some climbing.

+ and the only lighting is from headlamps set on strobe. One ice ax, placed in the middle of the tent when the bell rings.

Now, how long before someone posts an "Ugh, the Everest scene disgusts me!" comment? Then goes on to say how the tourist-climbers are buying the summit from the real climbers. I speculate it will be in less than 5 posts.

I agree, but that is just speculation on my part..

Look, that's a matter of personal choice and everyone has to make the decision that is right for them, after discussion with their family and their physician and their physician's family and their official family fishing physician. Sure purists will say go without, but at the end of the day the summit fight is only half-way and no crampon fight is worth dying for. We all crampon fight for our own reasons, one of the reasons we got into crampon fighting was the lack of rules, so it's not cheating if there are no rules. And furthermore, you're not the boss of me, Radson. I do what I want.

The best crampon fighter in the world is the one having the most fun.

Ok I will speculate (correctly btw) that you have a fantasy view of what a Buddhist is really like.

The photograph is also from the opposite side of the mountain. I don't expect that the article is 100% accurate. It's also good to know that 7000 meters is close to the summit.

At 7000 metres you're not out for the count unless the ref counts to fifty. Crampons are allowed unless you attempt a kickboxing move in which case a second referee at camp two will deal with the matter when you arrive moments later.
The strawman is evil and must be punished,

Yeah, I'm not under any delusions. I've spent enough time in different buddhist cultures to know better, I just think its funny to sort of put this whole "Jesus"-esque sherpa myth to bed. They are human beings just like the rest of us.

This whole crampon fighting thing really got me interested. I've been missing out. But I thought the first rule of crampon fighting club is that you "don't talk about about crampon fighting club?"
