Folly Peak, NW chutes?

by Sam Page » Wed Apr 07, 2010 5:38 am

Does anyone know anything about climbing the chutes on the northwest side of Folly Peak? According to my map, accessing the chutes would require ascending the East Branch of the West Fork of Snow Creek. (Folly Peak is a subsidiary peak of Mt. San Jacinto).

Taco: How would you access the drainage?

Are you thinking of the East Fork of Snow Creek? I am wondering about the West Fork of Snow Creek that leads up to the NW side of Folly Peak.

Thanks Taco. I am talking about B. One could follow the PCT for roughly 2000 vertical feet and then cut over to that ridge you mentioned. Who knows what the middle of the canyon is like, though.

I too have lusted over climbing and skiing this line for a while, Sam. I stare at it almost everyday as I drove home. I'm still hopeful I can fit it in but haven't found a free weekend to do it yet. I think we probably have a somewhat similar approach in mind - hike up the PCT to the south-pointing switchback at ~3700' and then attempt to bushwhack down to the drainage and hope and pray that you get to snow coverage before the thick underbrush saps your gusto.

Sounds good Taco, it would probably be one of the first weekends in May before I'd be able to get to it. What do you think?

I recently explored the approach to Folly's NW side. Here is my trip report.
