Garnet & 1000 Island Lakes

by David and Karen » Mon Jun 21, 2010 2:01 pm

I understand that there will be plenty of snow in the basin but what about the lakes themselves? Has anyone seen them recently?

Ellery and Tioga Lakes are at a similar elevation and they melted out last week. Is this a good barometer or do they usually melt out earlier?

Thanks

Ritter range snow

I just returned from a trip up Shadow Creek.
Lake Ediza still pretty much frozen--a wee corner near the outlet
has thawed. I suspect 1000 Island lake is frozen--it's higher.
I met a couple guys who tried to reach Garnet,
but turned back.

Pretty solidly snow from 9000 ft on, tho aspect makes a big
difference: I was able to climb to 10K ft above Ediza to overlook
the Nydiver Lakes (frozen solid) almost entirely on rock....

Thanks so much - we've moved our permits back a couple days - hopefully a lot of snow will melt this week
