I'm looking into a hiking, backpacking, climbing trip to Iceland for Spring '08 if I don't decide to do Mt Ranier instead. I could easily be talked into Iceland. My 20 yr old son may go also if we time it during school vacation.

Renting is easy but very expensive. Gas stations are everywhere except the interior. If you are going to do Ring road or excursions off of it - gas is never a problem. Lots of good camping everywhere. Lots of trails, hikes, hut to hut and even a bit of good mountaineering and ice climbing not to mention kayak rentals in many areas or boat charters for whatever you want. When they say it is a bad road - it is a horrible road. The interior is 4x4 country with not much in the way of supplies.

Not just renting, but everything in general is expensive. Truly, on the order of Japan expensive. Be prepared to spend a fair chunk of change, especially if driving a 4x4, and if you are coming from the U.S. with our ever weakening dollar. Plus, 4-wheel drive vehicles in Iceland are serious machines. There are tons of retired folks camping out of Unimogs which will make your vehicle feel like a VW Rabbit. And, to reiterate the previous advice, when a road is said to be "rough" or "crosses a stream" - it is generally an understatement. But, Iceland is a huge playground, so have fun.
