MP3 player while travel

by Rinat Shagisultanov » Sun Nov 21, 2010 6:36 am

It looks like there is less MP3 players with AA/AAA batteries these days. How do you go on extended travel 3-4 weeks (trekking or expedition) where the re-charging options are very limited or non-existent.
REI carries some funny stuff like emergency AA recharger for iPod, but I doubt it works.

Although I haven't used one yet I've been told that the Griffin reserve power pack works well for recharging iPods.

Someone gave me one of those solar chargers as a gift. It worked OK for charging the mp3 and cellphone. I ended up selling it on ebay because I rarely used it. It was a Solio.

I bought a second hand old mp3 player that still works with AAA batteries :) It's great except for the 1GB limit.

When I looked into cost/weight for the solar chargers for a 5 day backcountry climbing trip it was a better option for me to just buy some additional refurbed mp3 players ($20 each).

I have been using the Creative Labs NOMAD MuVo 128 MB MP3 Player for forever. It uses a AAA that lasts for days with lots of playing time. Simple to use too and really small.

I use my iPhone as my ipod & camera on my backcountry trips. And I just switch it over to "Airplane Mode" and can usually get 3-5 days out of a full charge. I think having it on airplane mode stops it from searching for a signal where there is none, and therefore saves battery life??

Since there's usually not that much to do at higher camps, I have consided buying one of those. Would probably buy it before buying solar stuff since it's cheaper, sturdier and probably eco friendlier as well.

This hand cranked 12V generator will work for your needs. You may want to research 5V generators. We used ours on Denali to recharge a couple of different mp3 players and a satellite phone in subzero weather. Kept us warm too!

That's a great idea, think I'll probably invest in one myself.

I've seen some DIY ones using an Altoid box. They look kinda neat and simple.

Radson,

Did you use the powermonkey or powermonley with the solar battery?

Fosanna,

Do you mean\ you're taking a couple of MP3 players w/ you on the trip with identical playlists?

FortMental,

FreeCharge looks interesting as long as it can charge the ipod. It looks like you have to crank up hard to get to desired voltage on the output. What kind of mp3 players did you charg with it?
