Newbie tent question

by absinthe52 » Sat Sep 19, 2009 9:39 am

Will an ultralight give as much protection as an expedition style tent

also, looking to do Shasta, Hood, with a follow on of Reinier and eventually McKinley. Any tent suggestion would be appreciated. Looking at the Nemo Tenshi/Alpinist/EV2/Elderado. Will be for only me and my wife
Thanks a lot
Matt

Probably, as long as the light tent holds together. In general, they aren't going to hold up to extreme weather as well as an expedition tent.

EV2 is quite small when you get 2 people and gear in it.

TNF Mountain 25 is a good size, bomber, and heavy as hell.

Don't have personal experience with the others.

Single wall tents like EV2 and Eldorado are too small for two persons on an expedition like Denali. Have you looked into MH Trango 2? It's double wall, large vestibule to put your gear.

I would defenitely say that EV2 is an expedition tent. It will protect you in really severe conditions. but it´s small for sure. Thats the price you pay for having a light tent. Are you going to use it in winter conditions? Thick sleepingbags and down jackets takes some place. It also builds a lot of frost on the inside. You could have a look at the Hilleberg Jannu. Its around 2.8 kg a little bit taller and has double walls

hilleburg, double wall, lightweight (~5 lbs.) and super easy to set up with fly, the inside won't get wet

the nallo 3 is what I have, both me and my dad are 6'5", and it's roomy for us. a third person can fit in in a pinch, if your smaller check out the nallo 2.

Agreed, my EV2 was perfect for just myself on Denali. I wouldn't want to squeeze 2 into it for more than 1-2 nights. If you can still find a MH Annapurna (check ebay) I would recommend that over the Trango, plenty bomber and much lighter. You might also look at the Marmot Alpinist, but don't get the older model with the pole sleeves look for the newer style with clips. Tenshi is a great tent, though my opinion on sharing it for more than 1-2 nights is similar to that of EV2.

Edit: missed that your tentmate would be female. might not be quite as cramped.

Again, thanks for any help....looking foreward to getting my feet wet. Originally from CO, but ready to conqour some bigger beasts!

I have an EV3, new Trango 3.1 for sale and the NF VE25. But....The best and roomiest 3 person with huge vestibule Hillenburg Kaitium 3GT @ 7.5#. Dual vestibule, dual doors, convertible porch, multiple entrance options, big enough for three plus all gear inside and a search dog.

Absolutely love it. Pitches inner and outer at one time, has enough room for 8 in emergency or lightweight mode stronger and more versatile than any tent I have ever seen.

You should give it a look.

3 Season Tents will not hold up under heavy snow. I've learned this the hard way. You need a good 4-season tent for heavy precipitation and or winds. If you want to go super light you might get away with a Pyramid style (old BD Megamyd, etc.) but you really need know your shit on putting it up and also be lucky in finding a good place to set it up.

I camp with a tarp or nothing 3-seasons and use the 4-season REI in winter. (Sierra Nev.)

Sounds like you want to do some things in the Cascades first, and Denali maybe later. Kind of two different needs, though some will probably differ. I'd suggest something like a Bibler Eldorado for the Cascades. A nice bomber, roomy 4-season with vestibule for cooking in (e.g., Trango) would be a lot heavier than you'd generally want for the other 95% of the time. Actually, for a lot of things (generally not camping up high on volcanoes though), a lightweight 3-season is probably fine, depending on what you do. YMMV

Ok,
So I think I'm narrowin g it down:
Nemo Moki
MH EV3
MH Trango 3
Hilleberg Kaitum 3 GT
BA Royal FLush 3

I figure a little extra weight might be worth the convienience of more room for gear. Any thoughts on my narrowed down list?

I personally don't have any experience with the tent but have you looked at the bibler Fitzroy?

It might be tight but its rated for 3 and I would definitely get the vestibule.

Edit: roomy for 2 cozy for 3.
