Peak suggestions for next week (to practice ice axe skills)

by tarushbali » Mon Mar 28, 2016 8:42 pm

Hi All

I know there was a similar post asking about peaks in Tahoe but I wanted to make this more open.

I'm thinking of climbing Whitney in a few weeks and was looking for peak suggestions (anywhere about <=6 hours from SF) for next weekend that are both pretty and also challenging enough for a beginner to practice their technical (ice axe/crampon) skills.

Thanks a lot for your help and hope to see you out there!

Well, I see you've experienced a Lassen snow climb already, but Brokeoff or Brokeoff-Lassen could be fun and scenic.https://www.nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/current_conditions.htm

Shasta, if conditions end up favoring a summit push, would probably be more fun and would give you some fresh acclimatization experience before Whitney.

Round Top/Carson Pass Area is scenic and has a variety of slope/route difficulty choices. I have no other personal experience with the rest of Tahoe Area/Tahoe OGUL list besides Red Lake Peak and Stevens Peak near Carson Pass, but HWY 50, Pyramid Peak, and maybe Mount Tallac (NE Ridge/Bowl) come to mind.

I might be out in the snow next week myself, so I'm starting to keep an eye on what is in decent shape for peakbagging, preferably without much snowshoe use, but maybe some easy crampon and axe routes or stuff that is already in tolerable shape for walking. I'm curious to see how much any storms or warm weather change conditions next week. https://opensnow.com/dailysnow/tahoe
