Snowshoeing the Tioga Road

by sgenise » Fri Jan 19, 2018 9:32 pm

I hear a lot about people skiing up Lee Vining Canyon or from Snow Creek up to Tuolumne Meadows, and I'm wondering if it's possible to do this as a snowshoeing destination. I have no ski experience, nor any particular inclination to learn, but I enjoy substantial snowshoeing in Tahoe and along Glacier Point Road.

Thanks!

Some additional info. The right side of the Tioga Road (for several miles after the gate at Le Vining as you go up) is prone to avalanche after recent snow dump (not now obviously). The right side of the road just past the (summer) NPS kiosk, the whole slope avalanches frequently. I have seen evidence of really big ones there. The distance from the locked gate at Le Vining to Tuolumne (where the Post Office used to be) is about 22 miles, if you try to do it in a day, a long trip on skis, let alone on snowshoes. Winter camping skills (when the road is in condition) are required.
