does anyone know of an inexpensive hotel near(hopefully across the street) the mexico city airport? we are arriving in mexico city around 10:30pm and aren't expecting the buses to be running that late. the lowest price we found on the web so far is ~$90/night. does anyone know of a better deal?

Hostal Moneda is a hostle in Mexico city that has great deals. You can get a bed for about 15 bucks or a room for 30. Breakfast and dinner included. They will pick you up at the airport 24/7 but it will cost about 10 dollars/person. It is in the historic district of the city so there is plenty to see for a day. Transportation to Teotihuacan or Amecameca is also easily arranged. they have a website; check iit out.

I have stayed at the Hostel Moneda. It is a great bargain and in the historic district. Taxis are cheap and easy from the airport. Just beware if you are arriving at night. While the area around the Zocala is thriving during the day, we found it completely abandoned by all by the seediest segment of the population after dark. Some really scary dudes approached my friends and me and attempted to take our duffle bags right out of our hands. We are all 6'4" and wouldn't appear to be easy targets, but we were far outnumbered. We high-tailed it to the hostel where a policeman in a bullet-proof vest toting a machine gun let us in the front door. About 15 mintues later we heard automatic gunfire in the alley outside. Don't know what happened, but glad we were inside.

The hostel has a nice terrace on the roof with views out over the city and a continental breakfast. The rooms were grungy, but habitable.

I used the Hotel Flemming when there in 2004. It was a couple blocks from the Alameda Park which was nice. The taxi ride for 3 of us was $15 at the airport. Better yet is to get out of the city and head to Amecameca if you can after you land. Cheers!

I stayed at Hostel Moneda last year and I was very pleased. The only problem is that you are arriving at a late hour. What I suggest is if at all possible is to grab a taxi from the airport and take it straight to the front door of Hostel Moneda. That way you could arrive safely(relatively speaking). I found the area of the Zocalo to be fairly nice and not at all dangerous, but you must be careful at all times anyways. If you take an approved airport taxi they are the best. Hostel Moneda is right on the Zocalo and close to many other important sites.

I highly recommend it, we got a private room with two beds and a bathroom for a little more than $10 a night per person, super cheap. The staff was helpful at the front desk also. PM me if you have any questions, I studied carefully how to get around Mexico City and when I got there everything went smooth with taxis and the subway, so nothing happened. If you plan on leaving early the next day for Amecameca or another city, it is very easy to get to the TAPO bus station by way of the subway which costs only 2 pesos! You have to change lines one time but the subway in Mexico City is awesome and easy to use. We also rode it with our huge backpacks and no one bothered us at all. I would expect you would have the same experience if you went and kept a cool head(it is intimidating to ride the subway there). Also if you have the money you could call for a taxi from the Hostel Moneda to take you to the TAPO, the only problem is that a market is set up every morning around 7:30 AM directly in front of the hostel in the street that prohibits the taxis from getting there, so you would have to leave around 6:00 AM to have a taxi come straight to the hostel. In my opinion, if you leave very early, take the taxi because the subway might not be running that early. If you want to sleep in, the subway is the best way because it is cheap, fast and takes you directly to the front door of the TAPO.

It isn't right next to the airport but it is a comfortable, clean place to stay with free breakfast and dinner.

I stayed at the Hotel Flemming this past December. It was convenient and cheap. I think I payed about US $35 for a night in a single. The rooms were clean and decent for the price.
