Good intro for RMNP snowshoeing trip?

by catullus » Mon Jan 04, 2010 7:57 pm

Hey all,

I'm new to Colorado and going to go explore RMNP this weekend on snowshoes. Any suggestions for where to start? I plan on spending one night backcountry. A summit would be great, but not necessary.

Thanks,
Chase

Start at Bear Lake and camp before you get to Two Rivers Lake. Slog up the low angle slopes to summit Flattop Mountain with option to continue on to Hallet Peak. That's a common and generally safe from avy winter outing. Whiteout blowing winds can be issue though.

This sounds like a great plan. Thanks for the tip! Great page on Flattop Mountain, btw.

Nelson -- thanks for the great recommendation. We had a great time. Here is a picture of me on top of Hallett Peak:
