Hiking/Trekking trail conditions - Bernese Oberland

by Tonka » Wed May 19, 2010 11:56 pm

Heading to Switzerland the end of next week and I'm struggling with some gear choices. We will be staying in hotels the entire trip so all hikes will be only day trips but we will be doing quite a bit of trekking. I'm wondering how much snow we will run into and how wet it will be. I'm afraid my boot selection does not include what I would really want which would be a gortex light hiker. I have Asolo Gortex leathers(GTX), La Sportiva Trangos, and Merrell Chameleons. As far as the pack I think I could get away with a small REI Flash daypack but I could bring a bigger pack like an Eiger 36 or something as a carry on. I have a technical Vaude pack which may make me feel more European :) Also, I do like trekking poles, should I not worry about them? We will be doing primarily the classic treks around the Oberland and other areas of Switzerland. None of this will be real technical. Thanks!!
