Abandonded VT ski areas?

by cwoods17 » Sun Dec 05, 2010 9:54 pm

Does anyone know of any ski areas that have been abandoned but are still skiable?
Thanks,
Connor

You can Hike up Mansfield and ski right down the runs there.

http://www.nelsap.org/vt/vt.html

Some of the info is also available in book form: http://www.nelsap.org/book.html

"Skiable" is the hard part - I'd guess that most of these slopes are still mostly grass, so easily skiable in one sense, but virtually all are on private property.

Well that was interesting. Round Top has reopened!!

When I was at UCONN, Killington had a "Try before you Buy", so we'd go there, if we were lucky get in 3 runs before we had to buy, then we'd go down to Round Top and - with our student ID - get a DayPass for $5.00 and kill the day.

Thanks. I'd been looking through the NELSAP website, just wanted to see if anyone could confirm any places as worth the hike.

Time for some trespassing..

Might be worth the hike if you live in Illinois, I guess. Most of these are smaller than the sledding hill I had in my back yard when I was a kid. If you want to spend more than thirty seconds on your skis, Mansfield is not a bad idea.

Mount Mansfield (AKA STOWE ski resort) has a lot of trails that were cut by CCC in early 20th century. You can hike up the hiking trail, or you can also hike up some low use ski resort trails, but you'll need snowshoes or skins.
