Hannegan Peak - First Week of August

by whiteroom17 » Sat Jul 23, 2011 5:47 pm

I have shelved the Lake Ann trip on account of all of the snow; I am now considering camping in the Hannegan Pass area and trying to climb Hannegan Peak. From the summitpost entry it looks like a very straight forward walk up in a normal year. Does anyone have any idea what it would be like this year with all of the snow?

I tried hannegan peak last year with similar snow levels. Abandon the trail on your way to the ridge from the pass, just use a GPS or copass bearing and kick steps straight up hill to the shoulder nearest the pass on a topo map. The last ridge should be any easy ridge walk if clear (it gets a lot of sun) but if it isn't, watch for cornices.
