I'm headed out next week for a few days backpacking in northern Yosemite, camping at elevations in the 7,000 - 10,000' range. I'm wondering when the mosquito bloom will hit that area this year -- any predictions, or reports?

Last weekend, June 13, I camped at Horton Lake out of Bishop, at 10,000' -- hardly any mosquitoes. There were more at a marshy area at 8,800' on the way in, but not too bad.

Mosquitoes starting to emerge at Crystal Lake in the Mammoth Area around 9900.

6 out of a 10 in the little lakes valley. 10 meaning you don't want to leave your tent.

Mosquitos on PCT between Reds Meadow and on to Thousand Island Lake, nothing deet couldn't handle. None higher up beyond lake. Nothing a week ago over Taboose and Pinchot Passes.

Up at Bubbs Creek there were 4.5/10 at Charlotte Creek camp. 5.5-6/10 at East Lake. Further up towards Ericcson Crags they were 7/10. I hate mosquitoes though, so maybe people who can tolerate them better would have a different rating.
Anyone went up Rock Creek? How are they up there by Chickenfoot lake?

Anyone has a suggestion for a beautiful lake to visit with a shortish hike to get to it? Like maybe 5 miles at most? That would hopefully not have too many of those blood sucking things..

On another board, someone just back from the west side of the Conness area at Roosevelt and Upper Young related they were about as thick as it gets. Lower down not so.

Tuolumne, Cherry Creek, Walker basins received a lot of precipitation in May, much more than other parts of the Sierra, and enough weeks have passed since that myriad squeets have now hatched. So that is why these areas are going to be much worse at least until damselflies and dragonflies make a dent.

Mosquitos are blooming in the wetter areas around Lodgepole. Saturday was 5/10 on the way to Mt. Silliman. Sunday was 7/10 on the way to Alta Peak. Dorst Creek Camp was 3/10.

Over McGee Pass yesterday they were FEROCIOUS!

Backpacked four days last week, June 24-27, out of Twin Lakes/Bridgeport. In places the critters were as bad as I've ever experienced in the Sierras: non-stop attack clouds, and when we retreated to tents, hundreds alighting on the exterior walls, waiting for us to emerge. Thanks to earlier comments on this post we took head-nets and extra deet, which made life tolerable -- would have been miserable without them. The worst spots were the meadows along Rancheria Creek and lower Matterhorn Canyon, and, curiously -- the summit of Pettit.

No mosquitoes anywhere along the Shepherd Pass trail.

No mosquitoes at Mosquito Flats, at Ruby Lake they were 6/10 this last weekend.
