I know. I have to drive 30 minutes to get to a city. :-P

I belong to the category of mountaineers who used to do rowing for years (15 years of my life).. like Mallory & Irvine, who knew it ? :)
Imho indoor rowing is good only if you have rowed on a boat and been trained in a rowing club before. Unless you have a very good trainer for indoor rowing. But I rarely see such people out of rowing club themselves.
Last winter I got a discount on the local fitness club near where I live, thanks to my company. There was an ergometer and I saw a couple of people using it randomly, it was painful to watch...
Yes, rowing is a wonderful sport, and nice type of physical effort, but indoor rowing worth only if you are teached...

Rowing

I'll agree with the burning calories part....I am a whitewater kayaker and I do a lot of long distance flatwater kayaking. Sure fire way to get nice abs.....more core in the actual kayak that on a rowing machine as far as I can tell. Either way, rowing can be a hardcore workout.

Didn't wanna hafta do this: 6:28 2k..............(unfortunately it's not me, it's my kid though) :lol: .

I sometimes think the rowing machine is a modern version of the rack. I don't do it much, but with that screen right there I have a hard time doing any extended time, always tend to go faster than I'm in shape for.

Scott, I row every now and then, not a huge fan in terms of enjoyment vs. running or biking, but it is a great workout. I do the CF row 500, 21 burpees, 400M run X3. That's 18 minutes of fun!

2000m (standard evaluation distance for competitors) : 6'51
500m (fantasy that we occasionally do for fun) : 1'18 if I remember well

Try to do rather this exercise (called "B1") :
Row during 20 minutes keeping a pace between 20 and 21 strokes per minute. Row long and strong, breathe deep and concentrate on the recovering as you slide back to the attack position. In the end, or a couple of times during the 20mn you can place an acceleration (I usually do it only in the end the last 2mn). That's an excellent aerobic exercise. Of course you'll watch the distance you cover (usually 5000m or a bit more), but it's not the main goal.

I agree on the training part. I'm also rowing on the concept2 and watched some videos, but I'm trying to find some time to get some lessons at the local rowing club.

I'll be in Russia again from the 7th till the 22nd, luciano. Interested? :wink:

There used to be an indoor rowing club a few blocks away from my home (owned by Paul De Weert) but they shut down.

Now the only way to row indoor is an expensive gym :(

We have two concept2 rowing machines in the office gym. I seriously like our gym. Every office should have one. Saves you time and money and keeps your employees fit and healty. (Even though I'm usually there alone, while there's +1000 people working here.

Interesting topic WouterB.

I just realized there isn't a single rowing machine at my gym. Twenty years ago they were all the rage.

I recently got my own Seakayak. I like to go out into the ocean. It's either paddle or die. Good motivator. Gets really interesting in a heavy surf. I like the wildlife on the islands.

Good luck in Russia with the weather. The Politics. Still think you should consider Kilimanjaro after this. However it goes.

Me and my climbing partner have talked about it before and we will definiately consider it. But if we summit Elbrus this year, we might also turn towards Mexico or Argentina.
