Southern Montana High Country Condition Report

by CBakwin » Sat Jun 11, 2011 2:33 pm

I know we are still a month plus out, but if anyone gets up high in Montana, perhaps you would be so kind to post what conditions you found for the rest of us who are waiting for things to open up a bit.... It will be appreciated. Especially in the Absaroka/Beartooth area, Good Climbing!

Not A/B, but was in the S. Madisons over June 3-5:
There was over 6 ft of snow at 9400 ft, snow line was at 8000ft on the West side.
From about 10,200ft -

This is outdated, but perhaps helpful to understand the coming summer -
from the early May west of the Boulder River (A/B):
There was over 8 ft of snow at 8600 ft, snow line was at 6600ft.

It's going to be a long time before trails are dry above 9000ft, as you mention.

Checkout the Montana Snotel site:

http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/snotel/Mon ... ntana.html

There are a bunch of remote weather stations in the area you're looking at that can tell you snow depth. It looks like most are still reporting 50 to 100 inches, with a couple showing 0.

Or if you want another perspective, the SNOTEL composite:

Thanks Peakhugger, very helpful. Different areas have different conditions, for instance where I live, the ridge back of my house goes up to 7,200' and is clear of snow...other locations, as you say still have lots of snow at that altitude. Looks like the Hilguard area is out at least for another month unless you want winter conditions. I suspect even a month might be a little optimistic for AB. Guess we will just have to keep snowshoes and skies with skins out for a bit longer.
More reports next weekend?

I'm in Red Lodge. Lots of Snow in the Beartooths still. Snow line is about 8000 right now. Its been cool and its not going anywhere soon. Let me know if you're looking for anything more specific. Lots of skiing to do still!
